Description |
Single seat body made of a wooden panel-sided box the interior of which is accessible through a trap door that forms the bottom of the seat. The seat sides are made of two horizontal iron arods bound with leather strips to which is attached a three-sided buttoned leather strips to which is attached a three-sided buttoned leather squab stuffed with curled horse-hair. The seat cushion is missing. The front part of the body is made of a wooden frame pated with iron to which is fastened the plank floor. At the front is part of what may have been a folding leather knee boot secured with leather straps. Some of the fastenings appear to be silver plated. The body is suspended by leather thoutoughbraces fastened at the rear to a cross-bar fastened to two wooden cantilever springs mounted on the shafts; at the front the throughbraces are attached to two short upright iron loops mounted on the draw-bar between the shafts. At each end of the draw-bar are what appear to be hand forged iron steps. The axles are of iron with square axletree nuts. The wheels have fourteen spokes with a pronounced dish. The outer hub hoops appear to be of a superior make and may be sliver plated. |
